TRG Training (The Learning Phase)

This 4-day intensive course is designed for active climbers who want to transition into professional guiding.

Between Training and Assessment

You must log the following:

  1. Guiding Experience: At least 5 days of supervised work (assisting or co-delivering sessions).
  2. Personal Climbing: At least 5 days of personal outdoor climbing (minimum 20 routes) at various locations.

Note: These are the minimum requirements. To feel confident during your assessment, it is highly recommended that you exceed these numbers.

TRG Assessment

This is the final 2-day evaluation to prove you are competent to lead sessions independently.

Sport Climbing Instructor

Training (2 Days)

  • Capacity: 1 trainer to 6 candidates (Requires 2+ people to run).
  • Goal: Learning how to teach others to lead climb on sport routes independently and safely.
  • Entry Requirements:
    • Must hold a current TRG (Top Rope Guide) or SPG (Single Pitch Guide) cert.
    • 20 days logged as a guide at various locations.
    • 80 sport routes logged personally at various locations.
    • Consistent lead climbing at Grade 18 or higher.

Phase 2: Consolidation (Between Training & Assessment)

  • Teach: 10 days of supervised or assistant instruction for lead climbing.
  • Climb: 30 new sport routes across different venues.
  • Maintain: Solid lead climbing proficiency at Grade 18+.

Phase 3: Assessment (1 Day)

  • Capacity: 1 assessor to 2 candidates.
  • Requirements:
    • Demonstrate mastery of the entire syllabus.
    • Instruct "model clients" (real climbers) in a practical setting.
    • Submit a professional session plan for the teaching day.
    • Hold a current, valid First Aid certificate.

Single Pitch Guide

The Training (4 Days)

This is an intensive course designed to bridge the gap between "climbing for fun" and "instructing for work."

  • Structure: The first two days focus on group dynamics (1:6 ratio), while the final two days dive into technical mastery (1:3 ratio).
  • What You'll Learn: Beyond just knots, you'll master high-efficiency anchor systems, self-rescue techniques, site management, and environmental ethics.
  • The "Shortcut": If you are already a competent trad lead climber (Grade 14), you can skip the "Top Rope Guide" level and jump straight into this.
  • Perks: Your course fee covers your ACIA Associate Membership for the year.

The "Interim" (Experience Building)

You cannot go straight to assessment. After training, you must continue documenting your experience in a logbook:

  1. Lead Climbing: You must log either 40 lead climbs (at least half at Grade 14 or higher) OR a total of 1,000 meters of lead climbing across various rock types.
  2. Shadowing: You are required to complete observation days with qualified guides. Your trainers will tell you exactly how many days you need based on your performance during the 4-day course.

The Assessment (2 Days)

The final hurdle to becoming a certified guide.

  • Requirements: You must present your completed logbook and demonstrate that you can lead Grade 14 on traditional gear with total confidence.
  • Outcome: Passing this means you are officially qualified to lead and instruct both single-pitch climbing and abseiling activities professionally.
